The C-64 is the best selling computer of all time, over 20 million models. Its strongest point was probably the huge amount of games available. The standard basic was very limited, and difficult to read, many instructions had to be poked straight into the memory and also some basic commands were in the form of shapes like hearts and clubs. The loading of software took a very long time, even with a diskdrive it could take minutes. Third party firms solved these problems by producing cartridges containing a fastload program which could make a program load upto 10 x faster. The diskdrive (1541) is connected to the serial port and is a single sided type, many people used to cut out a second write protect slot so they could use the other side as well (the C-64 doesn't use the index hole).
