Pink Floyd inactive at this time

On 4 April 1998, drummer Nick Mason of Pink Floyd sat in with Tommy Vance on the UK's channel VH-1. A number of uncommon Pink Floyd video clips were broadcast, but the most important moment came when Vance asked Nick whether the band would have a new album or tour soon.

"No," Mason replied, "because we've got no new material."

During the 4 April appearance on VH-1, Mason also commented on his famous dislike of pie crusts (immortalized on the "Live at Pompeii" film). When asked if he likes crusts now, Mason at first feigned innocent confusion, then said, "I've matured a lot since then."

Mason's statement that the band has no new material is supported by a Pink Floyd representative at Columbia Records who spoke to Gilmour about a month ago. At that time, Pink Floyd had not even entered a studio. The representative at Columbia also said that the rumor about a concert at the Great Pyramids in Egypt on 31 December 1999 is nothing more than a rumor, and that he's certain it is not being planned. "We'll be lucky to see something in '99," he added.

On 1 January 1998, David Gilmour appeared on the Jools Holland Hootenanny on British television BBC2. During that appearance, Gilmour said there would probably be no new album this year, and refused to speculate whether there would be new material before the year 2000.
