EMI Recorded Music has secured the worldwide rights to five classic Pink Floyd albums including The Wall, Wish You Were Here and Animals. The Pink Floyd catalogue has sold in excess of 175 million albums making it one of the most popular catalogues in music history. Previously Sony had rights to these albums outside of Europe and EMI had rights in Europe. Combined with EMI's other worldwide rights to Pink Floyd albums, the company will have worldwide rights to 14 Pink Floyd albums. This is the first time that one company has had rights to all these recordings on a worldwide basis. The band is currently in the studio finalizing work on an anniversary album project, which is set for release at the end of 1999. Pink Floyd formed in 1965 with Roger Waters, Nick Mason, Richard Wright and Syd Barrett. Early in their career, Pink Floyd assumed the informal role of soundtrack specialists. In 1972 they began recording Dark Side of the Moon which became their most successful record with over 30 million copies sold and it is now the third biggest album of all time. No album in history has remained on the Billboard Top 200 chart for 15 years in the way that Dark Side of the Moon did. Ken Berry, President of EMI Recorded Music said, "Pink Floyd is one of the most popular and influential bands in the history of music and we are pleased to have the opportunity to work with them and represent their amazing catalogue."
