Expanded "Zabriskie Point" CD features unheard Pink Floyd music
On 16 September, the soundtrack to Michelangelo Antonioni's 1970
film "Zabriskie Point" was re-released by Rhino Records. The
soundtrack includes three rare Pink Floyd tracks: "Heart Beat, Pig
Meat," "Crumbling Land" and "Come In Number 51, Your Time Is Up."
What makes this reissue special is the addition of a second CD
containing unreleased outtakes. Four Pink Floyd outtakes which were
recorded for the film can now be heard for the first time. The
newly-released Pink Floyd tracks are "Country Song", "Unknown
Song", "Love Scene (Version 6)" and "Love Scene (Version 4)." All
four tracks were recorded in 1969 during the making of Zabriskie
Point.
"Country Song" (4:37) is an actual unreleased song, complete with
lyrics performed by David Gilmour. It has been described as
reminiscent of music from the sountrack to "More", and features
piano at the beginning. The lyrics describe a metaphorical chess
game between the Red King and the White Queen.
"Unknown Song" (6:01) is the title given to a track which is known
as "Rain in the Country" to collectors. However, the version
appearing on the "Zabriskie Point" re-release is about a minute
shorter than the versions which have been circulating among
collectors. It is likely a different recording of the song.
"Love Scene Version 6" (7:26) is a blues jam recorded in the
studio, comparable to the spontaneous blues jams Pink Floyd often
played from 1969-1971.
"Love Scene Version 4" (6:45) is an unaccompanies piano
improvisation by Richard Wright, which later developed into "Us and
Them" on "Dark Side of the Moon."
The double-CD includes new artwork and a thick booklet with
extensive liner notes. The liner notes indicate that there is still
another half hour of Pink Floyd outtakes from "Zabriskie Point" in
the vaults, aside from the tracks appearing on the disks.
The new edition of the soundtrack also includes four tracks of
additional unreleased music from Jerry Garcia, titled "Love Scene
Improvisation" versions one through four. Garcia's pieces are
unaccompanied guitar.
The "Zabriskie Point" reissue retails for $29.98 U.S. It can be
found in most music stores, or may be ordered through RhinoDirect
at 1-800-432-0020. For more information, visit Rhino Records at
