New Book Shows Artistic Imagery of Pink Floyd

New York, NJ (September, 1997) Storm Thorgerson, the man who created unforgettable Pink Floyd record covers like Dark Side of the Moon, Division Bell, Wish You Were Here, and Houses of the Holy has now written Mind Over Matter: The Images of Pink Floyd (Sanctuary Publishing, distributed in the Western Hemisphere through Omnibus Press 800-431-7187 or 914-469-2271, 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. EST, Monday - Friday.) Celebrating the 30th anniversary of Pink Floyd, Mind Over Matter showcases the imagery of one of the most brilliant bands of all time.

Pink Floyd emerged in the late 1960's as a pioneer of what would be called progressive rock. Not only was the band's music out of the ordinary but its imagery was as well. Formerly a classmate of band member Roger Waters and a friend of Syd Barrett, Thorgerson's collage of mystical images first graced Pink Floyd's A Saucerful of Secrets album in 1968. He was also responsible for the intriguing designs on Atom Heart Mother (for which the bemused cows on the cover were better known than the music within), Meddle (a pigs ear under rippling water), Animals (a pig flying over a power station) and one of the best known rock covers, Dark Side of the Moon (a prism producing a converging spectrum which allowed the covers to form a continuous design on store shelves).

In his new book, Thorgerson provides an insiders view of never-before seen rough sketches, rejects, and variations on Pink Floyd artwork. Mind Over Matter contains nearly all of Pink Floyd's images and shows how one band successfully developed an unforgettable image through groundbreaking packaging, imaginative photography, visually spectacular stage shows, and innovative music.

Thorgerson founded the design studio Hipgnosis in 1968. He is the creator of 14 Pink Floyd record covers, 10 Pink Floyd concert films, and has been nominated for 7 Grammy awards, including one in 1996 for the Pink Floyd CD Shine On. A resident of London, England, Thorgerson has also been honored by Billboard and MTV as best director, and has five covers among the Rolling Stone Top 10 Covers of All Time.
