NATO ratification and position Greens

As of 30 September 1998 most Members of NATO have ratified the Protocol for enlargement. In the Netherlands approval of the First Chamber has not been given so far.

  1. USA ratified by the Senate on 30 April 1998. Votes: 80-19,

  3. Germany, ratified 16 March 1998

  5. United Kingdom
  6. Italy, ratified by Senate 13 May 1998 and by House of Representatives 23 June 1998.
  7. Iceland
  8. Norway, ratified
  9. Denmark, ratified
  10. Netherlands, 2nd chamber ratified 29 September 1998
  11. Belgium
  12. Luxembourg
  13. Spain
  14. Portugal
  15. Greece
  16. Turkey, the government threatens not to ratify since Turkey is excluded from EU membership for the time being.

Applicant countries:

  1. Poland
  2. Czech Republic ratified 15-4-1998 with 154-38 votes.
  3. Hungary, 16-11-1997 approved by referendum with an 80% majority.

Permanent members of the Security Council:

  1. The Russian Federation is opposed to enlargement of NATO.
  2. The Peoples Republic of China supports the opposition of Russia to enlargement

The position of some of the Member parties of the European Green Federation is:

  1. Die Grünen (Austria) Against NATO-membership of Austria. Co-operation in the OSCE instead of NATO.
  2. The Green Party (England and Wales) Against enlargement.
  3. Vihreä Liitto (Finland) Finland should not join NATO. Co-operation in the OSCE instead of NATO.
  4. Bündnis 90/Die Grünen (Germany) Party against enlargement. Parliamentary fraction divided.
  5. Zöld Alternativa (Hungary) Campaigned against NATO-integration.
  6. Federazione dei Verdi (Italy) The Parliamentary fraction voted in favour of enlargement.
  7. De Groenen (Netherlands) The executive committee is against enlargement
  8. GroenLinks (Netherlands) The fraction in the Second Chamber voted against.
  9. Miljöpartiet de Gröna (Sweden) Co-operation in the OSCE instead of NATO.
  10. Grüne/Les Verts/I Verdi (Switzerland)
  11. Ukrainian Green Party (Ukraine) Co-operation with NATO is welcomed but the development of OSCE and the expansion of OECD and EU is preferred to the expansion of NATO to the east.
