Black-figure Attic-Corinthian amphora
The Tyrrhenian Group
Zeus is seated on a throne. He is represented with head and legs in profile to the right, the body almost facing. Seated, he is as tall as the surrounding standing figures. The feet rest on a footstool. The right forearm is extended almost horizontally forward, the hand holding a staff. The left forarm is extended obliquely upward, the hand grasping a thunderbolt. The god has a pointed beard and wears his long hair loose. His dress consists of a chiton and a himation, which covers the left arm. His name is inscribed: ΖΔΕΥΣ.
Athena is not represented.
There are five deities at each side of the picture. At the right stand a goddess, on the footstool of Zeus, the right arm raised, the hand holding a wreath, the left forearm obliquely downward, the hand with extended fingers seen from the back. Poseidon and Amphitrite, identified by the inscription of their names <ΠΟΖΕΙΔΟΝ, ...ΡΙΤ...>, a naked god, presumably Hermes, and Hephaistos, identified by the axe. At the left side stand Eileithuia <ΗΙΛΕΙΘΥ...Ε>, the arms extended obliquely upward, the hands holding the head of Zeus, Dionysos <ΔΙΟΝΥΣΟ>, wearing the ivy wreath, Aphrodite <ΑΦΡΟ...>, Ares, with helmet, shield and spear, and Leto <ΛΕΤΟ>, all identified by the inscription of their names.
The throne has rectangular legs ending in lion's paws, and a low back with a swan's head decorative finial, and is covered by a thick cushion.
Between the legs of the throne <ΘΡΟΝΟΣ> is inscribed.
