Somewhat woody; stems with short, cylindrical or flattened, often tuberculate joints. Leaves small. subulate, caducous. Areoles bearing many glocids and usualy longer, stouter, spines. Ovary spiny or spineless. Seeds hard, pale, more or lees discoid or angular.
